Well hello there! Today it’s Spirit Day! If you don’t know what that is, it is a day to support LGBT+ people and to take a stand against bullying. Spirit Day was also started by a UWTSD student which is extra awesome and I feel for that reason alone I should do a little bit of a post about it and why it is an amazing idea and why its so important.
Spirit Day was started in 2010 and the whole idea is to support LGBT+ people all over the world. To do this, just wear something purple. It’s super simple and it means everyone can get involved which is great, and there’s a rare photo of my face showing you how to do it below. Another reason for Spirit Day is to just stand up to bullying in general because it is such a stupid idea and it has and continues to affect people of all ages, all over the world. I was bullied at school, you probably know someone who was bullied at school and surprisingly I know people that have been bullied at university over social media. It’s dumb and there is no need to bully people.

If you go and look up the statistics on LGBT+ bullying its actually quite shocking. In a world where same sex marriages are perfectly acceptable 74% of LGBT students were verbally harassed for their sexual orientation, 36% were physically harassed and 55% feel unsafe at schools. That really bugs me. Why should someone get bullied, assaulted or made to feel unsafe because of who they happen to be in a relationship with? It makes me really angry actually. If I’m lucky enough to have children one day I will teach them that its perfectly acceptable to be a part of the LGBT family. I have so many friends that are very open about their sexuality or gender, and I have some that don’t want people to know. The fact that someone is viewed differently purely down to the fact they like the same gender as them is ridiculous. They’re still human, they still think, breathe, dream and love the same as the rest of us.
The really sad part is that the Suicide Prevention Resource Center estimate that between 30 and 40% of LGBT members have attempted suicide,
Today, is a day all about love. Love is, and always be Love. Regardless of age, race, gender or sexuality. Love whoever you want, however you want. As long as you are happy with that one person why should anyone else get involved?
LGBT+ acceptance is also a huge factor into why I love performing arts, James Corden beautifully summed this up at the Tony Awards when he said “Theater is a place where every race, creed, sexuality, and gender is equal, is embraced and is loved. Hate will never win. Together we have to make sure of that”. It will of course take a monumental effort from everyone to stop bullying, right not I’m not even sure that it would be possible, but I can hope, and I can dream of a day when no matter who you are, what colour you are or who you love everyone will be accepting and supportive of that.
I’m going to finish with a quote from my favorite human, Lin Manuel Miranda (I don’t think I will ever stop quoting him, or even talking about him)
Love you, Bye!
P.S. Don’t Forget To Be Accepting
